• [oct 17] Dr.ir. Frans Willems has been elected into the Board of Governors of the IEEE Information Theory Society.
• [oct 10] On behalf of the members of the IEEE Information Theory Society the Board of Governors expresses its deep sorrow and profound sense of loss at the passing of Dr. Aaron D. Wyner, one of the Society's most accomplished and valued members. In addition to his many fundamental scientific contributions that have enriched the field of Information Theory, Aaron gave generously of himself to the affairs of the Society, serving as Editor-in-Chief of the Information Theory Transactions, Society President, and member of the Board of Governors for many years.
• [sept 9] Dr.ir. P.H.N. de With will become a full professor at the University of Mannheim, Germany. He will join the group "Schaltungstechnick und Simulation" of the Computer Science department.
• [july 3] Dr.ir. F.M.J. Willems, dr. Yu.M. Shtarkov, and dr.ir. Tj.J. Tjalkens are the recipients of the 1996 Paper Award of the IEEE Information Theory Society for their paper "Context-Tree Weighting: Basic Properties" published in the May 1995 issue of the IEEE Transactions on Information Theory.
