Introduction

There are at least two reasons why biometric recognition, i.e. identifying or verifying the identity of a person based on physiological characteristics or behavioural traits, is receiving an increased attention. The first is that governments have an increased interest in national security and citizen identity, which has caused them to bring forward plans for implementing biometric identity checks in relation to many applications, varying from biometric passports to health services. The second reason is that biometric recognition has the potential to combine to user convenience and security. This midwinter meeting offers an introduction to this exciting new research area by keynote speakers in the field. The presentations will be given in English. They will cover methods, fundamentals as well as security aspects of biometric recognition.
